Soul Fitness – Forget Not
Pastor Eddie Turner
Psalm 103:1-5(NKJV) – Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercies,5 who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
“I cannot be spiritually mature as long as I remain emotionally immature. My soul health, my emotional health, is necessary to live a fulfilled and God blessed life.”
v Physical Fitness
Medical professionals, exercise science academics, athletes and marathon runners like me will testify to the benefits of physical fitness. Physical fitness enhances our life.
v Spiritual Fitness
v New Creature:
2 Cor. 5:17(NLT) – 17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
Christ like attitudes, beliefs and thoughts must be learned and developed-they are not automatically deposited in our lives when we accept Christ.
- Spiritual Infants:
1 Peter 2:2(NLT)- Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment.

A Sign of Spiritual Health is a Hearty Spiritual Appetite.
- Spiritual Adults
Heb. 5:12-14(NLT) – 12 You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13 For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
v Soul Fitness
1 Thess. 5:23(NIV) – May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
With our spirits (heart) we connect with God; with our bodies we connect with the physical world and with our soul we connect with our mind, will and emotions.
Rom. 12:1-2(NIV) – Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
“the greatest need in the body of Christ is for Christians to get their minds renewed with the Word of God.”
Eph. 4:21-23(NLT)- 21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.
- Steps to Soul Fitness:
1). Command your soul (mind, will and emotions) to Praise God: take back control of your thoughts:
Psalm 103:1(NKJV) – Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!
- Satan operates in the arena of thought-the only way he can gain access to our lives is through an undisciplined thought life.
2). Refuse to take ownership of thoughts that are not pleasing to God!
2 Tim. 1:7(NKJV) – 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
The words “sound mind” is taken from the Greek word “sophroneo.” It is a compound word from “sodzo” and“phroneo.”
The Greek word “sodzo” means to “be saved or delivered.” It suggests something that is delivered, rescued, revived, salvaged, and protected and is now safe and secure.
The word “sodzo” actually depicts a person who was on the verge of death but then was revived and resuscitated because new life was breathed into him.
The second word comes from the Greek word “phroneo,” which carries the idea of a person’s intelligence or total frame of thinking including you logic and emotions.
When the two Greek words are compounded into one word, they form the word “sophroneo,” which pictures a mind that has been delivered, rescued, revived, salvaged, protected and is now safe and secure.
In moments of stress, pressure or fear and you are struggling to think straight-have you ever been tempted to think you are losing your mind?
It’s during these times that you remind yourself “God has given me a sound mind-a mind that is safe, secure, revived and protected.”
3). Refuse to Forget God’s Benefits:
Psalm 103:1-2(NKJV) – Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:
James 1:22-25(NLT)- But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
It’s always been amazing to watch how we can’t forget the bad things that happen to us- but we easily forget the good things that happen to us.
As a child of God with a sound mind I have the responsibility to reprogram my mind to remember God’s benefits in my life.
I Sam. 16:32-37(NLT) – 32 “Don’t worry about this Philistine,” David told Saul. “I’ll go fight him!”
33 “Don’t be ridiculous!” Saul replied. “There’s no way you can fight this Philistine and possibly win! You’re only a boy, and he’s been a man of war since his youth.”
34 But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, 35 I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. 36 I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! 37 The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!”
Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And may the Lord be with you!”
