Soul Fitness – Coming Out of the Dark Place

Soul Fitness – Coming Out of the Dark Place

Sermon Notes:

Psalm 103:1-5(NKJV) – Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

———————————————

The thought of running away and escaping somewhere was constant in my thoughts-but I knew better than that-because wherever I went-there I was-and I was the one that was struggling!

———————————————

·        Some of you live with family members who are bound by addiction. You don’t know which personality will show up today.

·        Others fight the battle daily of regret and condemnation of past failures.

———————————————

·        Still others live with the knowledge that your children are in trouble, they are not serving the Lord, or actions beyond your control have cause division in your relationship with them.

·        Some of you have encountered a life interruption due to a tragedy, disease or death and just getting by is a daily fight!

——————————————–

·        Others of you are experiencing life transitions-maybe children are leaving the nest; or moving away to pursue their career or education. Even others are approaching retirement age and direction for your next steps is muddy and unclear.

·        Maybe a relationship has broken, a dream has gone unfulfilled or a window of opportunity has been missed.

——————————————–

·        Or maybe on the outside everything looks good-but on the inside you are sensing a void and hopelessness that you can’t share because of the pain it would cause others.

·        Or just maybe a sense of heaviness is trying to get on you and you can’t put your finger on the why.

1). Recognize the Necessity of a Whole Soul:

1 Thess.5:23(NIV) – May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

——————————————-

·        Man is spirit being:

Gen. 1:26(NIV) – 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

John 4:24(NIV) – God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

——————————————–

Peter calls the spirit of man the “hidden man of the heart.”

1 Peter 3:1-4(NKJV)- Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conductaccompanied by fear. Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

——————————————–

Paul calls the spirit of man the “inward man.”

2 Cor. 4:16(NKJV) – Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.

——————————————–

The real you is the person on the inside; with my spirit I contact God.

When we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior it was our spirit that was born again:

2 Cor. 5:17(NKJV) – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

——————————————–

·        The Bible calls my body the outward man:

2 Cor. 4:16(NKJV) – Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.

———————————————–

My body and the desires of my body/flesh do not get born again-they have to be disciplined.

1 Cor. 9:27(NKJV) – But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

———————————————–

·        My Soul is my mind, my will and emotions:

Rom. 12:1-2(NKJV) – I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

———————————————-

·        Soul Fitness begins with the Recognition of Praise:

Psalm 103:1(NKJV) – Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!

———————————————-

The word “bless” means to “praise, thank and salute.”

·        David commands his soul to “praise, thank and salute the Lord.”

———————————————

Isaiah 61:1-3(NKJV)- The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor; he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives,and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn,
To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;

———————————————-

·        Darkness can’t hold a person who recognizes the power of praise!

Jonah 1:17-2:10(NLT) – 17 Now the Lord had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.

2 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside the fish.

He said, “I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered me. I called to you from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me!

You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves.

Then I said, ‘O Lord, you have driven me from your presence. Yet I will look once more toward your holy Temple.’

“I sank beneath the waves, and the waters closed over me. Seaweed wrapped itself around my head.
I sank down to the very roots of the mountains.
I was imprisoned in the earth, whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O Lord my God, snatched me from the jaws of death!

As my life was slipping away, I remembered the Lord. And my earnest prayer went out to you in your holy Temple.

Those who worship false gods turn their backs on all God’s mercies.

But I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the Lord alone.”

10 Then the Lord ordered the fish to spit Jonah out onto the beach.
